Pausing Starlink Roam: Standby Mode and Restarting

Starlink Roam is a travel subscription for using compatible Starlink satellite equipment away from a fixed home address, within the plan’s permitted coverage and rules. Eligible subscriptions can switch to paid Standby Mode between trips. This guide explains that option and the checks to make before restarting high-speed service.

This guide explains the decision in plain English. Service information was checked on 24 October 2026; your account’s current offer, eligibility and billing details take precedence.

Roam is the service, not the dish

Roam describes a subscription. Mini and Standard describe hardware kits. Owning a small dish does not determine your monthly plan or whether you can pause it.

Check the actual service line in your Starlink account. Promotion conditions, hardware rental terms and plan restrictions can affect whether Standby is offered.

What does pausing mean now?

Standby replaces normal high-speed service with a limited low-speed connection and a smaller monthly charge. Starlink describes it as useful for basic messaging and managing the account when another connection is unavailable.

It is not normal broadband for streaming or video meetings, and it is not an appropriate working connection for a customer hotspot. Do not assume a payment terminal will remain usable on it. Standby is also not intended for in-motion use.

Do not budget for a zero monthly bill while paused. Read the actual Standby charge shown in your account. We have not quoted a fixed fee because the amount and availability need checking against your service.

Before you pause

  • Check that your next trip or trading date is far enough away to make the change useful.
  • Read the displayed fee, effective date and billing-cycle information.
  • Check whether a rental or promotional offer restricts changes.
  • Decide whether any connected equipment depends on the existing internet service.
  • Keep access to your account and its verification email or phone.

Pausing should not be treated as a refund for days already purchased. Service normally continues to the end of the applicable current billing period; check the confirmation for your account.

How to request the pause

  1. Sign in to Starlink and open Subscriptions.
  2. Select the relevant service line and choose Manage.
  3. Choose Pause Current Service if the option is available.
  4. Read the charge, timing and conditions before confirming.
  5. Keep the confirmation and check the next bill.

If the option is missing, do not assume a fault or keep submitting the request. Your plan or offer may not qualify. Use account support to check the reason.

Restart before you need it

Open the service line, choose Resume Service and review the available plan and charge. Resuming high-speed service can trigger an immediate prorated payment, so check the amount before confirming.

Power the kit and test it before leaving for a trip. Allow for startup, software updates and any account verification. Restarting service and checking equipment at home is easier than discovering an account issue after arriving somewhere remote.

Pause, cancel and restart are different decisions

Standby keeps a reduced service arrangement running with a monthly charge. Cancellation ends the chosen service arrangement and may have separate hardware-return or promotion consequences. Read the terms shown for your account rather than choosing cancellation as a substitute for pause.

Do not assume a paused Residential service reserves capacity or guarantees the same plan later. This guide focuses on Roam; fixed-address availability and Residential reactivation can have different constraints.

A simple seasonal routine

Before winter storage, check your final travel date, billing date and pause confirmation. Before the next season, check available plans, resume the service and run the kit before loading the vehicle. Keep your power supply and cables with the dish so they are not forgotten.
