Starlink Mini is a compact satellite-internet kit with its Wi-Fi router built into the dish. It connects your devices without depending on a nearby mobile mast, provided the service is active and the dish has a suitable sky view. For a basic setup, place the dish, connect suitable power and join its Wi-Fi.
This is our practical guide for first-time users. Instructions and service information were checked on 24 October 2026. App screens and equipment bundles can change.
First, separate the kit from the subscription
Mini and Standard are hardware kits. Roam and Residential are service plans. Roam does not describe a special type of dish. Check that your order contains the hardware you want and a service that permits where and how you intend to use it.
This walkthrough is for Starlink Mini with integrated Wi-Fi. A Standard kit has a different arrangement, normally involving a separate router. A product called Router Mini is also different: it is a router rather than the satellite dish.
What to have ready
- Your complete Mini kit, including its supplied power equipment and stand or suitable mount.
- A phone or tablet with the Starlink app downloaded before you reach a location with poor coverage.
- Your Starlink account details and an activated compatible service.
- A suitable power source and an outdoor position with an unobstructed sky view.
Do the first setup before a trip when possible. Checking your account, learning the app and packing the complete kit at home makes the next pitch much easier.
1. Find the right position
Use the app’s obstruction check at the place where the dish will sit. Look for open sky rather than just a small gap directly overhead. Branches, a vehicle roof, a building or an awning can interrupt the satellite connection.
Put the dish on a stable surface using its stand, or use a mount suitable for the installation. Keep equipment and cables out of walkways and vehicle routes. A portable stand on a table is a parked arrangement, not a vehicle mounting solution.
2. Connect power
Connect the supplied cable securely to Mini, then connect the appropriate power supply. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact kit. For battery operation, use a manufacturer-compatible accessory rather than assuming a phone charger will work.
Mini’s built-in Wi-Fi means a basic setup does not need an additional router or network cable. An indoor router can be useful later if the dish is outside a metal motorhome and Wi-Fi coverage inside is weak.
3. Join the Wi-Fi and open the app
Look for the initial STARLINK network in your device’s Wi-Fi settings and connect. Open the app to check the terminal’s status. Set a recognisable Wi-Fi name and a strong password before sharing the connection.
Give the terminal time to start, connect and complete any required updates. A Wi-Fi connection to the dish is not, by itself, confirmation that the internet connection is ready.
4. Use the alignment guidance when it appears
Mini is positioned manually. Follow the app’s alignment prompts rather than assuming the first direction you chose is best. Check the connection status and any obstruction warnings after adjusting it.
On our RV visit to Potters Creek Park, the initial app setup took a few minutes. Its alignment tools became available after about ten minutes, and within fifteen minutes we saw download speeds over 200 Mbps. That was one real setup, not a guaranteed timetable or speed for another location.
5. Test where you will actually use it
Try the phone, laptop or work application from inside the vehicle, not just beside the dish. If internet works near Mini but not indoors, you may have a local Wi-Fi coverage problem rather than a satellite connection problem.
Moving equipment, extending Wi-Fi or adding a wired indoor router may help, depending on the kit and installation. Confirm accessory compatibility and weather protection before adding cables.
If it does not connect
- No power indication: check the power source and supplied connections.
- Wi-Fi available but internet offline: check activation, startup progress, app alerts and the sky view.
- Short interruptions: inspect the obstruction information and nearby roofs or branches.
- Good service beside the dish, poor service inside: check Wi-Fi coverage through the vehicle body.
Use the kit’s instructions and in-app support for a persistent fault. Avoid repeatedly factory-resetting equipment before checking the simpler causes.
At the next stop
Keep your normal network name and password. Place and power the kit at the new location, check the sky and app status, and allow time to reconnect. Your saved devices can then join the familiar Wi-Fi network. Stow portable equipment securely before travelling.
