A caravan or motorhome hookup lead connects the site’s electrical outlet to the vehicle’s mains inlet. Choosing one means checking the vehicle, the campsite’s requirements and the complete cable assembly. A connector that fits is only one part of that decision.
Check the vehicle and the site requirements
Read the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions and ask the campsite what supply and connection it provides. The Caravan and Motorhome Club describes a blue, three-pole 16A site connection and a 25m lead, within its stated tolerance, using 2.5mm² conductors. Its guidance also explains that cable joiners and splitters are not permitted on Club sites.
Check the requirements for the particular site you are visiting, including overseas destinations. Do not assume a shorter cable, a chain of extensions or an adapter will be accepted because it worked on a previous trip.
What to compare when buying
- Connector arrangement: match the site’s outlet and the vehicle’s inlet.
- Length: allow for the permitted pitch arrangement and the site’s specified lead requirements.
- Cable specification: check conductor size and the assembly’s stated application.
- Environmental protection: read the product’s rating and the conditions that apply to its connectors.
- Condition: inspect the existing lead before deciding to reuse it for another season.
Explore our 16A extension leads, then compare the individual listing with your vehicle and site’s requirements. The industrial plug guide explains the terminology you will see in connector descriptions.
Use the available supply sensibly
A campsite’s supply limit may be lower than the rating printed on a lead. The cable rating does not increase what the pitch can provide. Check the site information and appliance documentation when planning which equipment will run together.
The Club advises fully unwinding the hookup cable during use to avoid overheating. Follow the vehicle and site connection instructions, and keep the route clear of damage and trip hazards. Do not leave a lead energised on an empty pitch when taking a motorhome away.
Home driveways and other supplies
For a connection at home, check the vehicle’s instructions and the suitability of the supply before choosing an adapter. An adapter changes the connection; it does not upgrade a household circuit or establish that the installation is suitable.
If the proposed supply is a generator or a Type 2 charge point, read the separate generator guide or EV adapter applications guide. Neither is the same arrangement as an ordinary campsite hookup.
