Construction Site Power Leads

A construction-site power lead connects suitable tools, lighting or temporary equipment to the electrical supply specified for that site. Site connections can differ from a normal household socket, particularly for portable tools. This guide explains the information to check before choosing a lead.

Construction sites can include portable tools, temporary lighting, welfare cabins and larger equipment. Those applications do not all use the same electrical supply. Before choosing a building-site power lead, identify the equipment, the site supply and the specification set by the person responsible for site electrics.

Separate tool supplies from other site loads

HSE recommends cordless tools or tools supplied from a 110V centre-tapped-to-earth system for portable construction work. Domestic DIY tools, plugs and leads are not intended for site conditions. A 230V extension lead is not a substitute for a specified 110V system.

Cabins, distribution equipment and machinery may have different requirements from hand tools. Give each application its own entry in the order schedule rather than treating every site connection as interchangeable.

Build a clear cable specification

  • Supply: the voltage, current rating and exact outlet provided by the site.
  • Equipment: the manufacturer’s input specification and connector details.
  • Assembly: plug, connector, required length and any prescribed cable construction.
  • Conditions: the planned route, exposure and expected handling.
  • System requirements: the protection and testing specified by the site electrical contractor.

Read the connector markings and equipment documentation. A photograph is useful when requesting help, but colour or apparent physical fit alone is not a complete specification. See Industrial Plug Standards Explained for an introduction to connector identification.

Choose products for a confirmed requirement

Our 16A lead range, 32A lead range and distribution boxes contain different configurations. These categories are starting points for a specified order, not a statement that every item is suitable for every building site. Read the individual listing and match it to the site requirement.

If you need a configuration not shown, send the specification through our contact form. Include the equipment model and both connector ends; “a site lead” leaves too many details unresolved.

Inspection and damaged equipment

HSE calls for regular checks and taking damaged tools out of service. Where 230V equipment is used, its construction guidance sets out more frequent inspection and testing arrangements. RCD protection does not make damaged equipment acceptable or remove the need for a suitable supply.

Use the site’s inspection procedure and electrical safety plan. Do not make temporary repairs or change protection arrangements to keep a faulty item running.

Generator-fed site equipment

Read our generator hookup guide when ordering a lead from a generator outlet. Questions about a generator’s earthing or neutral arrangement belong with the manufacturer and a competent electrical professional who can assess the complete system. A bonding plug is not a universal fix; our neutral–earth bonding guide explains why that distinction matters.

Further guidance

Use this page to prepare a buying specification. Site electrical design, installation and verification require the appropriate competent people.

Connectivity for temporary offices and mobile teams

A site office or mobile support unit may need cloud documents, orders and communications as well as electrical power. Read our Starlink and 5G mobile internet guide to compare the connection options, then check the business service and network requirements for the intended location. Connectivity equipment also needs a suitable power arrangement.
